JOMO – America’s Playground

by Tom Evans on April 11, 2010

JOMO - America's Playground

Now, I am a white European who lives in England and most of my friends would not even give JOMO and America’s Playground a listen.  Why?  Well, most have “decided” they do not like rap or hip-hop.  My gay friends get all unnecessary declaring that rap music is just sexist and homophobic and others state it is just black people getting all angry and spouting trash down the mic that none of us can understand.  Perhaps you are the same and would not normally give this genre of music a chance because of preconceived ideas.  After hearing so much about Snoop Dogg, after his UK immigration issues, I decided I wanted to go check out some hip-hop and rap music – enter JOMO!

Love Electric: Lovewhip

by Tom Evans March 25, 2010

As soon as I pressed play and Love Electric started, I knew that the album description was 100% right:

Lovewhip’s new album, Love Electric, is a futuristic dance party complete with unicorns, icebots, intrigue, electronic sex toys, and rock’n'roll! Each song on the album is chock full of catchy hooks, mixing dancehall reggae with disco, pop and rock.

Love Electric opens the album and I absolutely love Erin Harpe’s vocals.  It may seem corny but I like the sound of electricity that starts Love Electric.  I wonder if that is one of those electronic sex toys, they mention.  It works for me.  The music is energetic, exciting, and sexy and travels along, well, like electricity.  This song has a hook, is catchy and has good lyrics.  Love Electric will make you move.

Nightclub: Bill McCarthy

I listened to this album several times but found it hard to be inspired into writing.

I did go into this with high expectations after reading Bill’s press release relating to Nightclub:

Stuff you can listen to and relate to. Make you feel like you are on a journey with the singer and song. If [it’s] instrumental or vocal, [I] want to connect to the listeners and take them on my adventure through the song.

The Unbearable Romanticism of Melancholia: Musical Mind Control

Before even listening to The Unbearable Romanticism of Melancholia, I was intrigued.  The name is quite a mouthful and somewhat thought provoking.  When you add to this the band name of Musical Mind Control, you do wonder what you are going to hear.  You have to be dealing with an intelligent person here or at least someone who understands the power of words.  Does Musical Mind Control equally understand the power of music?

High Ceiling: Illusions

High Ceiling is quite a unique band.  When I first heard them, I thought I was listening to a group of black men from London or Jamaica.  They have a strange sound of almost an English accent mixed with Jamaican.  I was so wrong on both counts.  High Ceiling is a band of white American men from the United States.  Yes, this impressed me.

Bryan Gorsira: So Far

by Tom Evans March 13, 2010

Bryan Gorsira and his album, So Far, is a great example of never judge a book by its cover.  When I received a copy of the CD, my first impression was that not a lot of work had gone into this package.  I was wrong!  Bryan chooses to focus on the most important element – his music.

So Far opens with Searching.  This track instantly establishes the style and sound that will continue throughout the album.  It reveals that Bryan is a very mature and serious musician and songwriter.  I love the imagery of Searching, ‘chasing those dragons in the dark’.  Bryan’s voice is very soft and gently delivers a fantasy story that transports me to the wilderness by a stream, wild animals and, yes, those dragons.  Great!

Magix: Rescue Your Videotapes

I finally decided I was going to transfer all those old videos onto DVD.  In addition, my mother wanted me to transfer old camcorder footage to DVD.  Therefore, online I went in search of the right product.

I found some expensive ones that were beyond what I really wanted to do, so I decided on Magix based on price and it seemed very simple and easy to use.

Ordering Magix: Rescue Your Videotapes from AmazonUK meant I only paid £37.97 and it arrived the next day, which was great.

AVS4YOU: Video Editor

I needed a program that enabled me to edit video files on my PC.  I thought I would use Windows Movie Maker but after numerous crashes and it refusing to save for some strange reason, I had to go look elsewhere.

After downloading several trial programs, I found AVS4YOU.  I liked the fact you could use the program in full.  The only thing that you have to put up with is when you play back the completed movie it will occasionally display the AVS information.  This is not much to put up with when trying out a demo.  Better that than them restrict some of the features.
